Momo :: Pug Terrier Mix

Momo is one of those Pug mixes that have become so popular, and it’s not hard to see why. She has a great disposition and still retains that Pug cuteness, but she also has very high energy and loves her ball (or in this case Finn’s ball). I had a pleasure shooting Momo and Finn on the same day, so stay tuned for photos of Finn and photos of the two of them.

I just love this shot of Rocky. Not only is he one of the best trained dogs I’ve ever met, but he is also a super sweety. In this shot I feel like he is embodying his wolf ancestors.

Shop Dogs :: Lola at Rook and Rose

As an owner of a fellow bulldog (Charlie is half French Bulldog) Lola has a special place in my heart. Something about these snorting dogs makes me smile and just want to hug them. Lola helps her mom, Erika, out at Rook and Rose a few days a week and can usually be found passed out in front of the cooler.

I have a theory about dog names. I meet more and more dogs with “people names” (my own dog is no exception) and I think it is because dogs are increasingly seen as members of our family. My in-laws have no children, but they have two dogs who they snuggle up on the couch with, and lots of couples get married and get a dog instead of immediately getting pregnant. Since we see them more and more as members of our family we name our pets the same as we could name our kids. Of course, this doesn’t apply to all pets, and I think it is great when owners come up with original names like Banana and Sundae (also I don’t think there is any wrong name for a pet, whereas I would never think of naming my child Apple, or Blue). I joked with Kevin that I wanted to name our dog Kitty, purely for the fun of calling “Here Kitty, Kitty” at the dog park. Needless to say, we went with a different name.

Along with this trend in names, pets are also increasingly welcome in work places. So, I decided I wanted to do a personal project where I photographed some of these dogs at work. I started with Taio (mostly because I already knew him, his owner and where they both worked) from around the corner from me at Frontrunners.

As I photograph these dogs at work I will be publishing a photo, or two, as I go along.

Lil Pheebs : Frenchbo Puppy

One of the great joys of being a wedding photographer is getting to see my clients expand their lives and families. For Emily and Craig their family now includes little Phoebe, who stole my heart because she and Charlie are the same mix, French Bulldog and Boston Terrier. How can you not love those ears?!

As with most puppies she is still learning what she can and cannot chew on. Car armrests are out! Happy Friday!

Cousins

Okay, I will fully recognize that I am ridiculous for calling my dog and my sister’s dog cousins, but neither of us have kids, so let us just have this for now, okay? Harold and Charlie met over the summer when I was down in California for a few weeks shooting some weddings. It took them a while to get used to each other, but they finally figured it out. I took these on a walk near my mom’s house.

Yes, those are in fact random mattresses stacked in a parking lot. Don’t ask, because I don’t know why they are there.

Charlie Enjoys TV

I recently read Inside of a Dog, by Alexandra Horowitz and I found it very interesting. The book covers the research that gives us a peek into how dogs perceive the world. We can never really know what they know, but we can do some experiments with them to gain some understanding. I learned a lot. And one of the things that I think about a few times a week is dogs and TV, mostly because Charlie likes watching TV. Before we got Charlie we upgraded to a BIG TV and got HD broadcasting. Had we not taken the later step Charlie would probably never have had much interest in TV. With out getting to technical, HD broadcasting has a faster frame rate than regular broadcasting and though it doesn’t make a huge difference to us, it does to dogs. Scientists think that dogs see time “slower” than we do and when they watch regular TV they see individual frames and not a moving picture. With HD though, they see it pretty much the same way we do.

Charlie has clued into our TV since he was a pup, and we used to laugh at him when he would see an animal on the TV and them run into our bedroom looking for that elephant. It took him a while to figure out that no matter how hard he looked there were never any animals in our bed (our TV is mounted on a wall that is shared with our bedroom). Charlie has mostly lost interest in any TV we watch, unless the program has dogs on it. So imagine how excited he got when he saw this commercial:

This made me laugh out loud. How many of our dogs eat things we wish they would just stay away from? I know Charlie has gotten his fair share of tissues out of the garbage bin, but luckily my husbands facial hair has stayed off limits.
